Q1 Spends the Holidays With TSO

Q1 will light up the holidays for the third year in a row when The Trans-Siberian Orchestra begins its 2005 tour November 10th with two identical systems simultaneously crossing the US for over a hundred shows. TSO has become an entertainment industry phenomenon with its hugely popular seasonal tour, expected this year to be among the highest grossing tours of 2005. Production Lighting Designer and East Coast Lighting Director Bryan Hartley has designed TSO's largest production to date including a combination of 180 Vari*Lite VL 3000's and Martin Mac 2000's, 120 Martin Atomic strobes, 600 Pars, 80 color changers, 4 Compulite Vector consoles, over 100 motors and more than 1000 feet of trussing. Q1's Craig Redden who has worked with TSO for over five years, says he knows that each year Hartley, along with West Coast LD Dan Cassar, will pose new challenges as the show gets significantly bigger every season. This year, according to Hartley, while the equipment supply increased substantially, Q1 was able to design a remarkably efficient system that could be set up in the morning and ready for a matinee performance that afternoon. The holiday-themed tour ends just short of the New Year with shows December 30th in New Hampshire and Illinois.

Twentieth Century Fox's I, ROBOT, uses 42 VARI*LITE VL3000 Spots from Q1

Directed by Alex Proyas and starring Will Smith, I, ROBOT will be one of the most talked about films of 2004 - both by moviegoers and by lighting professionals in the film industry. Director of photography Simon Duggan's use of VARI*LITE VL3000's to create special effects pushed the functionality of automated lighting in filmmaking into uncharted territory. Said Duggan, "It took only a few minutes to achieve what could easily have taken hours with other devices in front of traditional lighting fixtures."

Q1 and Vari*Lite Head Home To North America With Sarah McLachlan

Those who plan to catch one of Sarah McLachlan's shows on her current North American tour can expect to see a rig full of moving lights. Just don't expect to see a lot of movement - or to be precise, don't expect a lot of unnecessary movement.

Q1 supplied Lighting Designer Graeme Nicol with nearly 50 Vari*Lite automated luminaires for the lighting rig, but the philosophy behind the lighting design is somewhat paradoxical.

"Just because they're moving lights doesn't mean they have to move," Nicol says...

Q1 and Vari*Lite Join Bigger Better TSO Tour

In its six years of existence, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's winter concert has grown into one of the most popular tours of the season, and a key reason the holiday extravaganza has made the jump from small theaters to sold-out arenas night after night is the impact the lighting has on the audience.

Unlike most concerts, where the lighting is secondary to the performers and the music, with Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Bryan Hartley's lighting design is part of the overall experience. Rather than being an unnoticed guy in front of a lighting control board, Hartley is the conductor of the symphony dancing through in the air, across the stage and spilling onto...

Q1 and Vari*Lite Go Down Under With Sarah McLachlan

For the Australia/New Zealand opening leg of Sarah McLachlan's 2004 world tour, lighting designer Graeme Nicol knew he wanted a warmer look. To create the design Q1 supplied a mixture of VARI*LITE automated fixtures including 10 VL1000 tungsten units, eight VL5 fixtures with tungsten source and eight VL3000 Spot luminaires.

"I'm running the VL3000 Spot units with full CTO all the time because I want that warmer look," Nicol said. "I didn't want it to look like an MTV thing."

The eight VL3000 Spot fixtures are placed on the mid-truss, evenly spaced and alternating with the VL5 units. Because the automated rig is a scaled-down version of the rig he will use...
